Topic: Criminal Justice System
Description:
More than 12 million people are incarcerated globally. Although countries have varying incarceration systems, issues of prison overcrowding, violence, and human rights violations plague the world of justice. The DISEC Criminal Justice System committee will seek to reform legal and penal systems to make them more effective and humane. Delegates will discuss how to fix this societal issue while identifying underlying problems with common incarceration practices.
As nations have such differing stances on incarceration, the committee will promote healthy debate as delegates look to promote their agendas while writing resolutions. Possible solutions could include empowering through education, making penalties more stringent, and enhancing rehabilitation programs. The committee will examine successful case studies and emerging practices from countries taking diverse approaches. Identifying the balance between public safety and the universal rights and dignity of an individual will be crucial for crafting comprehensive resolutions.
Since the dawn of civilization, the idea of justice has existed in some form. Human atrocities have been committed in its name. Yet, there are instances across history that have shown that it can maintain order and bring about rehabilitation. This committee is an opportunity to shape a future where justice serves all members of humanity.

My name is Hamdan Khan, and I am thrilled to be your Vice Chair for General Assembly #1. A little bit about myself is that I am a Sophomore/Lower from Australia and a proud resident of Main Street Hall at Phillips Exeter. I first became involved in Model UN in 5th Grade due to my interest in International Relations but attended my first in-person conference in 7th and participated in a Crisis Committee on overpopulation. Since then, I fell in love with MUN and have participated in numerous conferences including PEAMUN last year. However, this will be my first time chairing and I’m excited to contribute to PEAMUN this year and share this experience with all of you. Please contact me at [email protected] for any questions regarding our committee. I look forward to meeting you all in the fall.

My name is Colbie (she/her) and I’m a lower from Los Angeles, California. I started Model UN 2 years ago at my old school and grew to love it. I have attended several conferences across these 2 years, and they have been a great and fun experience for me. I was able to grow my knowledge in important issues and met so many interesting people. I also like playing sports on campus such as field hockey, swimming, and water polo. I enjoy listening to music as well; my favorite artists are Noah Kahan, Gracie Abrams, Zach Bryan, and more. In my free time I love going to the beach, hanging out with my friends, and biking around. I can't wait to meet everyone in committee!
