Topic: Imperial Japanese Supreme War Council
Description:
When Japan entered isolation in 1603, Romeo and Juliet had just been published by Shakespeare. 250 years later, when Japan was forced to open its borders to the rest of the world, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels published the Communist Manifesto. The overthrow of the Shogun ushered in a period of rapid growth and modernization, as Japan transformed into a world power that would rival even Great Britain and the United States. In the wake of World War I, a series of naval treaties, immigration policies, and government corruption scandals led to strong antagonistic feelings toward Westernization. A rise in nationalism and a brewing global war combined to put Japan in an interesting situation with significant implications for the rest of the world. Delegates will represent generals, admirals, ministers, and chiefs of staff in the Supreme Council for the Direction of the War, working together to fulfill Imperial Japan's quest to dominate Asia. In events following the coronation of Emperor Meiji (1926), delegates will fund military exploits, coordinate arms treaties, and vote on domestic policies that will change the course of global history, all while working to prevent an internal collapse of the Japanese Empire.

Committee Dais
My name is Logan and I’m a Lower (Sophomore) from Los Angeles, California and I’m excited to be a crisis chair for PEAMUN XVI. I have been a part of MUN on and off since 6th grade. I love history, particularly 19th and 20th century politics and warfare, and am excited to channel that passion into this year’s crisis committee. Outside of MUN, I am a water polo goalie for Exeter and a cohead of two affinity groups. I love listening to music, watching movies, and traveling. I am excited to orchestrate an exciting crisis committee this year with Henry and Nina and look forward to meeting you all in committee!

Hi, my name is Nina Fazal (they/she) and I'm one of the two staffers for this crisis committee! I am originally from New York City, and I am a lower at Phillips Exeter Academy. I started participating in Model UN at the start of prep year, but outside of Model UN, I enjoy playing squash and taking part in the wide variety of clubs and affinity spaces on campus. At PEA, I am especially interested in all of the history and classics offerings, and I love taking classes in those subjects as much as possible. In my free time, I love reading, listening to music, and going to the gym with my friends. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at committee in November!

Hi, my name is Henry Wise and I am a rising lower at Phillips Exeter Academy. I use He/Him pronouns and am from Greenwich, Connecticut, which is near New York City, about a 45 minute drive away. I have done Model UN for one year, my prep year at Exeter, but it has been so much fun, and I have gained tons of experience so far. I have attended 3 conferences so far: PEAMUN, MITMUN (MIT model UN) and PAIMUN (Phillips Academy Andover model UN). At these conferences I was able to gain more knowledge about Model UN and I have learned so much in the past year because of these conferences. I am thrilled to be staffing this committee about imperial Japan and am very excited to get to see and know you all in the committee.
