Topic: Turkish Invasion of Cyprus 1974
Description:
It is July 25th 1974, and just five days ago Turkish troops invaded the Republic of Cyprus. Conflict is raging across the island as the Cypriot national guard fights back against the advancing Turks. British, Turkish, and Greek officials are currently meeting in Geneva to create a ceasefire to end the violence once and for all. The delegates of this committee will be representing an individual in one of those three groups, and the goal of this committee is for the delegates to create a permanent ceasefire that ends this dispute. This event is one that is rooted in a complex history dating back hundreds of years. Ethnic violence has existed through years of colonialism and resentment riddles the island. Although previous ceasefires have been created by the same three parties, these parties violate them time and time again – most recently with this full-scale invasion. This committee will test delegates’ abilities to both compromise and problem solve while staying true to their position in the face of a nuanced issue many have tried and failed to solve in the past. The fate of Cyprus is in your hands.

Hello! My name is Sophia Marya (she/her), and I am currently an Upper/Junior. I am from San Francisco, California, and have been doing Model UN since 6th grade. I am passionate about geography, international relations, and geopolitics, and I help run the school’s geography club. I also enjoy cooking, baking, and wheel pottery both at home and at Exeter. Recently, I have developed an interest in European license plates and hope to add a Cyprus plate to my collection in time for the conference. I am so excited to be chairing this committee for PEAMUN XVI and to meet all of you in November!

Hi! My name is Lily Rampe and I use she/her pronouns. I am an Upper at Exeter originally from New Hope, Pennsylvania. At school, I write and edit for the Exonian, Exeter’s newspaper, tutor in the writing center, and participate in community service clubs! I also play volleyball, row crew, and play the flute. In my free time, I love to read books, hike, and travel. I started MUN in 9th grade. I have participated in many MUN conferences and am excited to Vice Chair this committee! At last year’s PEAMUN, I was a staffer to a specialized committee, and I look forward to building on these skills at this conference. Can’t wait to meet you all!
