Topic: The Vietnam Conflict
Description:
Vietnam’s origins began in French colonialism, until 1954 in which the Vietnamese nationalist forces (Viet Minh) defeated the French in 1954. The Geneva Accords in 1954 signaled the official end of the First Indochina War, separating the country of Vietnam at the 17th parallel and later, mandating nationwide elections to bring the country together in 1956. In spite of these initiatives, the US backed South Vietnamese government under Ngo Dinh Diem refused these elections due to South Vietnam's absence at the accords. Simultaneously, North Vietnam, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam led by Ho Chi Minh, was determined to unify the country under its communist rules. These fundamental philosophical differences built the framework for this conflict, with each side seeing itself as the legitimate government of Vietnam. This colonial period left deep scars on Vietnam's political, social and economic structures, creating long lasting resentment towards foreign intervention. The French colonial administration extracted resources, suppressed local culture and maintained a prejudiced social and governmental hierarchy focused on elevating French settlers and Vietnamese elites. As a result, poverty and nationalist settlements became common amongst many Vietnamese civilians. Thus, allowing the rise of Ho Chi Minh’s and the Viet Minh troops.

Hello Delegates, my name is Logan Beckerle and I am an 11th grader at Phillips Exeter Academy. I am from Las Vegas and I use he/him pronouns. I have done MUN for 3 years at Exeter. My favorite committee I have been in was a HGA at HMUN relating to the development of Nuclear Weapons and the Cold War. Outside of MUN, I am a writer for the Exonian and I have wrestled for over 12 years. I also volunteer in blood drives through Exeter's Student Service Organization. When I have free time I like playing spikeball with my friends or watching movies. I wish you all luck in your preparation for PEAMUN and I can't wait to meet you!

My name is Sophia Butler, and I’m a junior at Phillips Exeter from Massachusetts. I started Model UN in my freshman year, and my first conference was actually PEAMUN. I’ve been to a few more conferences since, like MITMUN. Last year, I was a staffer for one of the GA committees at PEAMUN. Outside of Model UN, I run cross country and track, play the cello, and do a few clubs. I also love spending time outside, especially at the beach. I’m so excited for the conference, and can’t wait to meet you all!
